Siemens claimed that its range of power control systems and protection equipment, substation automation systems and Ethernet switches are conform to IEC 61850 and IEC 61968 in the framework of future smart grid solutions.

The IEC 61850 standard has been defined in cooperation with manufacturers and users to create a uniform, future-proof basis for the protection, communication and control of substations.

The IEC 61968 standard defines interfaces for all the major elements of an interface architecture for Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and are to be implemented with middleware services that broker messages among applications.

Siemens Energy asserted that its smarter utility solutions were put to test at the Paris, France power utility EDF by the users’ association UCA to check their compliance with the abovementioned standards. Siemens’ network control systems was tested for data interchange capability in compliance with the power distribution management standard IEC 61968. Meanwhile, an interoperability test was conducted on the company’s energy automation products for checking their compliance over the IEC 61850 standard.
